Teaching Practice

Procedures of Teaching

I was nervous during my first final demonstration because I had never taught English before and lacked speaking skills. Despite creating my lesson plan in English, presenting and demonstrating to the students took a lot of work, as everything in Indonesia is written in Indonesian.

I memorized my speech beforehand. The next day, I arrived and met with my C.T. Before the class started, I gave my lesson plan to fulfill the assessment requirements. We asked the students to change into their physical education uniforms and remove their jackets. Once everything was set, we prayed before beginning the class. Afterward, the students went to the court. I had prepared the necessary learning materials, such as speakers, a laptop, and a projector. I instructed the students to form a line within their respective groups as they will be engaging in a warm-up exercise accompanied by lively music.

After completing their warm-up exercises, I instructed the students to remove their shoes and socks and gather on their mats for the yoga lesson. Despite my heart racing, I greeted the students and explained yoga and its techniques, including the 2-to-1 breathing technique. Lastly, I instructed the students to carefully read and follow the instructions for the 2-to-1 breathing technique. The students were asked to ignore their peers and focus on the 2-to-1 breathing technique. Afterward, they were asked to describe how they felt. Some responded with, "It was a relief," others said, "I feel relaxed, sir," and the majority replied, "I want to sleep, sir." The class then proceeded with a video demonstration of yoga poses, which the students followed according to the instructor's guidance.

After class ended, we assigned the students the task of performing four minutes of yoga each during the following week.

Time Managemet & Organizing Activity

Physical education class lasted one hour, as the subject requires extensive preparation due to its many activities. Despite only occurring once a week, it was crucial to ensure that students gained knowledge and benefits from physical education.

Occasionally, the class was shortened due to events or teacher meetings, resulting in a 40-minute class period. As a result, I had to skip some parts of my lesson and focus on the essential points.

Classroom Management

Effective classroom management is essential for teachers as it sets the tone for the lesson and ensures the students can benefit from their time in the classroom. During my session, my colleagues observed and assisted me, which helped me to handle the class well. I provided concise and precise instructions, which the students could understand and follow respectfully. Despite my lack of fluency in speaking, I am grateful that the students could comprehend the lesson and complete the exercises accordingly.

Problem-solving while Teaching & Staying in Baguio

The primary issue I encountered while teaching was the language barrier. Due to this barrier, I struggled to communicate efficiently with my students. Sometimes, I would need to remember certain English words, hindering my ability to adequately explain the lesson. However, my students could grasp the main points despite the occasional setback. Because of that, I have learned some Filipino greetings such as "magandang umaga," "magandang hapon," "magandang gabi," and "salamat," as well as the usage of the word "po" as a sign of respect when placed at the end of a sentence. This knowledge will enable me to greet members of the school community appropriately.
